Yi-Tan Weekly Tech Call #
18
2005-01-31
(Monday
)We have several guests this week
A world without DRM is still difficult to envision, but it promises abundant innovation and even fertile areas for profit.
Notes after the call:
The music industry has to improve its image among its customers, many of whom have taken up Robin Hood behavior against the record labels, and some of whom are simply slipping away -- they're uninterested in the next pop act and seek independent, interactive, fringe, fractal sources of entertainment.
Part of the problem is that the music business still sees those people as consumers, not as co-producers of value. This value doesn't come only from rating systems or chatter on bulleting boards about the latest bands, but is going right to the heart of the creative process. Welcome to DIY, remix culture.
Only problem is, the industry is still using a one-size-fits-all approach.
- Adam Klein of BMI Music Publishing
- Brad Templeton, chairman of the EFF, and
- Steve Crandall, who was our guest host the past two weeks
