  • Yi-Tan Weekly Tech Call #
    163
    2007-12-17
    (
    Monday
    )

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are history, but you still don't have everything you need, do you? And tech gifts always have a certain appeal.

    So together, let's discuss:

    • What does it take to buy a Wii this season? Do you have to sell your first-born? Isn't that whom you're getting it for?
    • How should we decide between competing products? (Let's collaborate here!)
    • Where are the best deals? Is online better than off?

Let's share links and opinions here. Fill these in at will:

    • The top Wii games to get are: Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, ...
    • The best GPS is...
    • My favorite digital camera is:
      • Canon PowerShot SD870 IS. Image stabilization and wide angle (28mm-equivalent through a nice zoom). A little bigger than I'd like but much better pix. Dell has them on sale.
      • Panasonic Lumix line of cameras. Priced right. Zeiss lenses and incredible quality for the money. Optically image-stabilized, 8 megapixels... $350 for the top of the line??? Here's that one.
    • The best medium-priced flat-panel monitor is:
    • The best deal on a larger flat-screen TV is:
    • and more here

This month's Wired is mostly a geek gift guide. There are others online (PC Mag, CNET, CIO, NY Times).

And if your conscience is nibbling at you for having too much stuff around, you could always Change the Present, or take the Handmade Gift Pledge (hard to do in tech!). Maybe a subscription to Make or Craft magazines is a decent compromise.

    Comment:

I tried to comment below, but it wouldn't let me include my URL (something about Link Spam).  So I'll add it here.

I wrote a blog post about charitable holiday giving, which referenced and linked to this call – particularly Change the Present and the Handmade Gift Pledge – as well as several very cool resources included in the December issue of Real Simple and A Better Present for a Better Future.
